WAVE ROCK

Wave Rock is located in Western Australia. Wave Rock is a natural rock formation that is shaped like tall breaking ocean wave. Wave Rock is a granite cliff 15 metres high and 110 metres long. It forms the north side of a solitary hill, which is known as “Hyden Rock”.

Wave Rock’s rounded-like shape has been caused by weathering and water erosion which has undercut the base and left a rounded overhang.

Wave Rock is what geologists refer to as a, “flared slope”. It is argued that flared slopes are created by the concentrated chemical weathering of rock at the base of a large rock formation. This chemical weathering produces a concave upward or inward, pocket of heavily weathered, relatively loose bedrock.

The Rock is composed by grey and red granite stripes. The colours of the rock were produce by the rain, chemical deposits (carbonates and iron hydroxide) down the face, forming vertical stripes of greys, reds, and yellows.

It is an interesting and nice spectacles to see how the rock changes its colour along the day, producing awesome views. The wave rock is without doubt one of the most awesome and beautiful rock formation of the world. And it’s believed that this amazing formation was more than 2,700 million years in the making.
