Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall was a guarded concrete barrier that physically and ideologically divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989.

The barrier included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, accompanied by a wide area later known as ” The death strip” .

View from the west Berlin side of the wall, here follows the curve of the Luisenstadt canal which was filled in 1932.

It is constructed by the German Democratic republic starting on 13 August 1961, the wall cut off ( by land ) west Berlin from virtually all of surrounding East Germany and East Berlin .

The wall symbolized the lack of freedom under communism. It symbolized the cold war between the communist Soviet bloc and the western democratic, capitalist bloc.

Professor Stein said that Berlin was on the frontline in the cold war struggle between the superpowers. The Berlin Wall divided families who found themselves unable to visit each other.

This wall is built to divide Germany between east and west .

No one liked the wall because it seperated them from their family and friends.

The fall of the Berlin Wall was a major turning point in the history for many reasons.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, there was no more communism in Germany.
