The South Shetland Islands are a group of Antarctic Islands lying about 120 kilometres north of the Antarctic Peninsula with a total area of 3,687 square kilometres.The South Shetland Islands are rich in wildlife.

all have strikingly different ways of coping with the harsh antarctic environment.
Antarctic fur seals are the most common pinniped found breeding around the South Shetland Island.The rate of fur seals production at Cape Shirreff and the South Shetland Island has decreased substantially in the last decade which indicates that the recovery of fur seals from being driven to extinction in the late 1800s has slowed dramatically.
Pinnipeds are a conspicuous component of the marine ecosystem around the South Shetland Island.The Antarctic fur seal in the most abundant pinniped at Cape Shirreff.
